Upgrade time!

Journal Entry: Fri Oct 7, 2011, 11:39 AM
All my equipment is pretty outdated at the moment. It all runs great, but my Cintiq 12wx is roughly 4 years old now. It's losing it's lustre, and just doesn't provide me the real estate I need to work. My 20.1" monitor is feeling a little cramped as well.

So, having worked really hard the past few months, I'm super excited that I was able order a few things I really needed. Yesterday I ordered a brand new 24" IPS display to replace my 5 year old LCD, and today I managed to find a place selling the Cintiq 24HD's before they make a wide release, so I ordered one of those too!

It's all pretty pricey, so I'm lucky that these things will probably last me half a decade. That's the fortunate thing about working digitally is that you can get away with buying 'supplies' once every few years typically. It's going to make working so much easier and more fun, so definitely expect new art soon!

How is everyone else doing?

That is very cool ! I just went and watched a few videos on it. I wish I could afford
that one it looks great and I love how it adjusts. I'm trying to save up enough money
to get the Cintiq wx for my fist drawing pad. Good luck with you new Drawing pad.

That's so cool. For me a Cintiq is just a pipe dream. I recently upgraded my computer though, so now I can do posters!

That's the best thing about tablets, they last a long time. I still have my bamboo from 5 years ago. XD Seems so small now.

getting new hardware is always awesome. when i drop a lot of money, sometimes i just get focused on how much i am spending, and not how much i am gaining. then, eventually, i will stop thinking "oh man, i spent too much.." and start thinking "omg this is awesome to have!"

Nope, not jealous at all! (If I repeat it enough times, I might start believing it, too...) Been stuck with my Wacom Volito 2 for years (I think it's the cheapest and smallest one they made at the time, but at least it's a Wacom), and having wet dreams of getting a Cintiq. Yeah, well, perhaps when I win the lottery. ;) Have fun with your new stuff, looking forward to some awesome art from you in the near future!

Would you recommend the 12WX as my first Cintiq? I've been on the Graphire for 4 years and I produce pretty good stuff with it, but I feel a Cintiq might give me that extra accuracy being able to draw on the screen. Plus its the only Cintiq in my price range and I'm too nervous to do a DIY Cintiq or a tablet PC. My computer is a lot faster than any tablet PC I've seen so I feel like it'd almost be like a downgrade. and a DIY Cintiq makes me nervous cuz it might not be the quality of a real Cintiq even though it's cheaper. Anyway that's what I'm up to right now. Trying to figure out if/how I should upgrade. And rebuilding my portfolio from scratch.

If you get the Cintiq, definitely hold out for the bigger version. I got the 12wx and I love it to death. I use it everyday!. But ever since I got it, I've been yearning for the bigger version. I didn't get the big one at first cause I didn't know if the Cintiq would feel right. It does. I can't replace paper and pen/pencil, but is really close to it. I have saved on art supplies and my trips to Blick's has dwindled so far that I forgot I had a discount card the last time I went there. So get the small if you really can't wait. But if you're like me you'll be wanting an upgrade for the next three years.

Another reason I'm considering the 12WX is cuz I travel a lot and I normally bring my tablet everywhere and it's easier to bring the 12WX everywhere. But at the same time if I had a bigger one I could just bring my regular tablet with me when I travel. But switching between the 2 too often might be a little weird.

I know what you mean. I got the asus eee slate a little while ago so I can travel and produce art. And even with its great power, it's not powerful enough or comfortable enough to do full productions. So I always end up starting work out of the house, but finishing it at home. Which really makes me feel that the real estate is a big issue when it comes to my digital art. It's a handy tool but not the end all be all tool. Then again, is there one that exists. I mean; even though I have photoshop, that is just a finishing program I usually open Sai, Manga Studio or Illustrator before going into Ps.
