Fast and easy way to create a reference sheet...

Journal Entry: Thu Oct 25, 2012, 6:24 PM
Just the other day, I discovered a super quick and easy way to create reference sheets for digital painting. So, instead of having a ton of documents open all at once, slowing down your Photoshop, or spending a half hour to create your own sheet, you can use Picasa to create one for you in just seconds.

Below is a video I made to show you how. There are some other tips in there as well, so take a look if you're interested!

Take care!

I am using Picasa for a year now to preview images and PSD documents. Never really been interested in other things it can do. But this little thingy here can save me now a lot of time when trying to create some pic collage for blogging header etc.
Thanks for the tip! :chew:

Interesting feature. I appreciate the effort you put into creating the video. Felt like a noob when you mentioned multiple images taking up extra comp resources, since I never really thought about that. For me Picasa kept locking up whenever I actually went to finalize and create the collage.. maybe cause it wasn't finished scanning, but oh well. Guess I'll have to create the ref sheets manually in photoshop.

Someone else mentioned to me that it was locking up as well, but you might be right about it still scanning. Give it another go once it's done and let me know, or perhaps try reinstalling it.

Normal Photoshop doesn't have collage mode, hurrrr that's something to dwell on since it does appear in Photoshop Elements. :iconthinkingplz:

But then again since I use Artrage mostly, I just pin my refs to my workspace (quite a handy feature), or if I have alot I just open Elements Organiser.

I didn't realize Elements had it, though I suppose it makes sense because Elements is a combination of Photoshop features and a stripped down, user friendly editor like Picasa.

Ironic that you describe Elements as user friendly, I am finding it quite the snub. :iconmeanieplz:

Maybe I should find a new photograph editor. :/

Haha totally. I always used to dread closing Photoshop because of the pain of having to select all the reference I wanted open again, and having to organize them D:

Definitely. Such a pain in the ass! And if you're using an old computer like me, having all those images open at once is just too laggy, lol.

Ctrl+Paint is great, and that's definitely an intuitive way to do it. It's probably better suited to fewer images though, as it can still become kind of cumbersome.

Plus you still have to take the time to paste everything and make them into smart objects. Definitely worth it for certain scenarios, but Picasa is great for getting a reference sheet super fast so you can start working right away.

Pasting everything into one document and converting to smart objects is actually pretty quick imo(make a new canvas, drop everything into it, spam the enter key), you do still have to arrange things though.

Anyways, I do like your method too, just offering up another alternative others might not have thought of.

Yeah, for sure. I do like the fact that Photoshop CS6 now automatically places images into a currently open document if you drag them from a folder, AND defaults them as smart objects. That certainly saves some time, and it's nice to be able to have some interactivity.

It's just nice to be able to automate that process, especially for artists who have a high volume of work to get done, deadlines, and/or a lot of reference to deal with.
