Stress = the Tetris Effect?

Journal Entry: Tue Jun 9, 2009, 1:17 AM

Have you ever worked on some sort of task for so long, where it becomes the only thing that occupies your mind? Like, imagine painting something for a day straight, stressing on it, and then going to sleep... and then all you dream about is painting it. They call it the Tetris Effect, and on Wikipedia it says:

"The Tetris effect occurs when an activity to which people devote sufficient time and attention begins to overshadow their thoughts, mental images, and dreams.

It is named after the video game Tetris. People who play Tetris for a prolonged amount of time may then find themselves thinking about ways different shapes in the real world can fit together, such as the boxes on a supermarket shelf or the buildings on a street.[1] In this sense, the Tetris effect is a form of habit.
"

Sometimes it's useful, and I actually can solve problems in my dreams, wake up, and paint it. Other times, it's just my subconscious not being able to let go of the task.

I recently did some samples for a rather big company (fingers crossed), and now every time I shut my eyes, I'm coloring lines... over and over and over. I almost feel like I should be getting paid, lmao. Then I wake up, and I still see those damn lines and the colors I was putting to them...

Sometimes when you wake up, it feels like you never stopped working... You're just as tired as when you went to sleep and sometimes it's demoralizing when you finish something off in a dream, and wake up only to have to do it all over again.

Is that something that happens to you guys sometimes? And if so, in what way? Share your experiences with me, I'm interested in what sort of things pry their way into your subconscious and if you have any ways to beat them out. The mind is a curious thing.

Happens to me all the time, hence why I'm still awake at 2:21am. Trying to finish touching up materials for a 3D bug render.

Yeah, although i've had it from relaxing AND working. There have been so many times when i've went to bed after playing a marathon level of RA2 or Generals (this is when I used to game A LOT)and i'd close my eyes and see prysm tanks and chinese hackers with laptops. I find that taking a break between going to bed and finishing a piece of work/game helps. Chill in the bath or shower, go for a walk, read a book. That helps a lot, but sometimes it can be your so engrossed in work/game you look at the clock and it's 2am and you need to be up at 7 the next day so you can't really do that. Maybe try setting yourself deadlines, like say - i'm stopping painting at 10; no 'oh i'll just finish that bit, oh that bit needs tweaked' and just shut down your computer or put away the paints. Just stop and get the hell away from it and chill out, then say at 11 when your mind is calm THEN go to bed. You'll start to hate your love otherwise.

After a Japanese test? I dream Japanese. After an English speech, I can't stop thinking of how to speak persuasively, or analytically. After maths, I keep figuring out useless sums. Work (as a checkout chick at a retail store) I just keep going through the motions in my mind. Art, continually tracing and colouring imaginary lines. It happens a lot. It's often not useful simply because I either have finished, or can't do anything right that minute.

Eiko: There is so a spoon!
Ikkie: Spoon? What spoon? Where'd you get that one from?
Nara:...Matrix...

It's good to learn the name of my problem... I solved some geometrical problems while sleeping, and nowadays I see game screens while sleeping. It'd be helpful if you learn any solutions for this problem.

Are you there?

I don't often remember my dreams, but I do tend to obsess over a particular subject for much too long to the point where it's all I can relate experiences to. I'm sure that if I did recall what I've dreamt that I'd be experiencing the effect. I never do feel quite rested.
