Vortex by Rahll Vortex by Rahll
I've been tinkering with this painting on and off for something like a year. For whatever reason I just never had the motivation to see it through, but I always liked the idea so I finally just finished 'er up. Still not entirely happy with it, I was just never able to resolve some of the problems I should've addressed early on, but oh well, can't win em all.

Large parts of it are definitely matte painted if anyone is curious, and for the ship I started with a low res 3D model in Sketchup and did a lot of painting and texturing on it.

Hope you like it!

I'd dare say the San Jacinto and that cutter rising in the background have seen better days. Brilliant work all round mate.

May I use parts of the picture for a collage? I really like what you did with the water and it would fit in perfectly.

Hey there, just watched your review of the Cintiq 24HD at YouTube, thanks for that. I wonder if the 'touch' version is worth the extra money, what do you think?
Mostly though, I came by here to compliment you on the drawing! Pretty awesome stuff!

Wow this ship in sketchup, is the painting all digital or also scans from offline painting?
I love the diagonal positioning of the ship, it looks strong in the vast ocean, not yet ready to sink.
Thanks and look forward to watch more of your work.

I wish you didnt use a 3d model for the ship. you can see it right away..

Cause 3d modeling isn't a really time consuming or precise art or anything like that :|

right, so according to you if it is time consuming, it always fits in with the rest of the artwork?

No, but if it's such a nuisance, so give some constructive feedback instead of just stating x and y.

what is your point? I was actually trying to be helpful to Rahll. And the simple conclusion that something looks off in a piece, even if you cant name exactly why, is already useful to a lot of artists. I stated the ship looked a little off to me, because you can see too well it was made in 3d for this piece. That the styles didnt match up right for my eye. That is already contructive feedback. Constructive feedback doesn't need to have a solution. As long as it can lead to improvement.
I was not hating on the picture, I was trying to help. Rahll is a good painter and he might just figure it out on his own as long as he sees the obstacle..

This is brilliant, Reid. I absolutely love it. It's like a cross between a waterspout and the event horizon of a blackhole. It reminds me of the time I was in a lighthouse and a large waterspout descended from the sky into the ocean like a long glass worm right in front of it. It made such an unearthly sound. I look at this painting of yours and I hear that sound. :)
