The Manhattan Project by Rahll The Manhattan Project by Rahll
Commission for a graduating EOD technician and his class. For those of you who don't know, it stands for Explosive Ordnance Disposal, and these guys have a seriously dangerous job. I have a lot of respect for them, and it's only fitting to portray them as calm under pressure, because the slightest muck-up can be the difference between life and a very chunky death. "Initial success, or total failure."

Supposedly this is going up in their Nukes Division.

Hope you guys like it.

---

Absolutely massive thanks go to `adonihs for all the input on this one, I really don't know what I'd do without him sometimes. Also, huge thanks to =CaelestisTrucido for keeping me company through the long nights of working on it.

Also, parts of this are matte, but it's been heavily worked on, just so there's no confusion

Dude, sweet! I saw this in Nukes (by far one of the best pieces in the division-if not the whole school)! Just browsing deviantArt for stuff relating to EOD, great work!

Wow, I really like this. It's bitter sweet for me though. My boyfriend of almost 4 years is in the AF getting ready to start his training for EOD. He will be in for 6 years. I'm really worried and don't know what to expect. *sigh*

Anyway, as I said, this is beautiful. I love the colors and the amount of detail. Well done. <3

From what I was told by the EOD tech himself, it's technically one of the safest jobs in the military. I'm sure he'd be happy to answer your questions if you have any concerns. His dA name is *Neutral-Scott.

The manhattan project ended up starting the nuclear weapons program for the united states, and the first nuclear detonation in the world was fired during the operation.
Hmm, that mushroom cloud in the background reminds me a lot of the french 'licorne' shot, during their nuclear test series, [link] , just scaled down about 1,000,000 times ;)
Nevertheless, the image you have produced looks great.

Wow amazing piece, great composition.

Lyrics from Manhattan Project by Rush!

Imagine a time when it all began
In the dying days of a war
A weapon that would settle the score
Whoever found it first would be sure to do their worst
They always had before...

Imagine a man where it all began
A scientist pacing the floor
In each nation, always eager to explore
To build the best big stick
To turn the winning trick
But this was something more...

The big bang took and shook the world
Shot down the rising sun
The end was begun and it hit everyone
When the chain reaction was done
The big shots tried to hold it back
Fools tried to wish it away
The hopeful depend on a world without end
Whatever the hopeless may say

Imagine a place where it all began
Gathered from across the land
To work in the secrecy of the desert sand
All of the brightest boys
To play with the biggest toys
More than they bargained for...

Imagine a man when it all began
The pilot of 'Enola Gay'
Flying out of the shockwave on that August day
All the powers that be, and the course of history
Would be changed forevermore...

EVERYONE! WALK FOR YOUR LIVES! ...Hey is that George Clooney?

Awesome work man. I'd say that that is the epitome of a bad day on the job. I have a friend that wanted to be EOD in the navy but washed out due to physical stress related injuries. If he had it his way this could have been him. This is great, keep it up.

Great. Really great. I've got one problem with it though: I think the mushroom cloud is a bit dark. Nothing wrong with dark, of course, but it would be a good thing to make some orange light shine through the cloud. After all, it's a nuclear explosion. If one were to be standing at this distance and look at the explosion from this angle, he'd be blind. And dead in a split second. But since a picture full of white is not an option, I'd say that a some orange..."cracks" in the cloud would be the way to go. If you understand what I'm sayin'. :bucktooth:

Still great though. Keep kicking ass! :peace:

since i'm a beginner and love this style any tips? which software did you use to create a thing like this?

Thanks :D This was done in Photoshop, and employed a lot of custom brush use actually. Also, the buildings are matte painted, meaning they started as a photograph and were painted into to integrate them into the scene.

A style like this as a lot to do with dynamic lighting, so play around with screen layers, color dodge, and hard light.
