Kick Ass - The Deal by Rahll Kick Ass - The Deal by Rahll
One of nine illustrations commissioned by Ignition Interactive for the Kick Ass comic/movie property which I worked on with `adonihs. I ended up having to do each of these in less than a day back in January, which was a real rush compared to what I normally do, but it was a lot of fun.

This one has some matte painting elements to it such as the building. The problem was, I based the background off a super low-res image I found, so I essentially had to repaint all of it, and now it looks a lot different from the original.

Anyway, I hope you like it!

I'm teaching a friend in Romania to play Battletech TCG over skype, so I decided to modernize all of the cards. I used your art for Black Market Connections [link]

I'm sorry, but you'll need to take down the deviation. It's wrong to use someone's work then tell them after the fact, without even asking permission. That's a violation of an artist's copyrights. Furthermore, I don't even own the full rights to that painting, my client does, so I couldn't give you permission if I wanted to.

If you refuse to take it down, I'll simply report it and deal with it that way, but I hope you understand and take care of it yourself. I don't think anyone would object to personal use for you and your friends playing some cards, I know I certainly don't, but you shouldn't be displaying it in public on the web.

Thank you.

I really love your environments. They are amazing, but I must say you need to work just a little bit on your character models. They seem like they were painted (well) and put there, as opposed to be part of the world. The body structure, and expression is fine, its the way you paint them in comparison to everything else that makes them stand out though. With the characters just try and make them more defined. Make their textures and lines "harder," if you understand my meaning.

That having been said, the textures on the ground and the bar are amazing. everything looks real, like you are there and looking down on this deal. The shadows and the way the scene is lit really adds to the shady feel without making it the clichéd "in a dark alley" feel. I really enjoy how you kind of push conventions without shattering them. Its really refreshing.

Great work, Reid. Looks awesome.

Yeah, thanks a lot for the input man. Like I mentioned in the description, I had less than a day to do each of these, and I spent 95% of my time getting the environment right because it was the most important thing in my opinion, so the characters were a bit of an afterthought. Had very little time to get them in, but for the time constraints I'm happy with it.

My apologies, need to pay attention more :P

The more i look at this, the more feel like im in the scene - those crossed cables in the foreground really complete the effect.
And nice nod to the matrix trilogy, putting the architect in there :P

This is amazing! I really love the perspective. I tend to struggle with that at times, but this is gorgeous. I also can relate to trying to find high-res photos to use for matte paintings. It can be a challenge sometimes.

If you don't mind me asking, how are these going to be used in the movie exactly? Like, promo material or something? I'm asking because I'm interested in this type of bidniss. But also, none of them scream "Kick-Ass" to me, so I'm also confused.
