Hayling by Rahll Hayling by Rahll
Update: I now have a blog for things regarding Hayling! Check it out here!

My new personal project: Hayling. I'm aiming for it to be a complex narrative and hope to tell it in a unique format, probably some sort of hybrid of a graphic novel/comic/art book, as well as straight up illustrations with clues and hints to the storyline and characters.

I don't want to reveal too much right away, because the progression is going to be fairly complex and involved with twists and reveals, but the general concept is this:

A group of complete strangers find themselves in a precarious position, trapped inside the walls of an enormous hi-tech facility, in some unknown, yet familiar, location. With strange marks on their bodies and no memory of how they got there, they work together and traverse the compound looking for an exit. But they soon begin to realize there's much more to their plight than they initially thought. Each passing moment presents not only more questions, but deadly challenges and startling discoveries of things that shouldn't even exist.

But as hours turn into days, the group becomes more desperate--their paranoia almost unmanageable. They struggle with the increasing feeling that whoever or whatever is orchestrating this rat maze has much bigger plans for them. As they continue forward, hanging onto their last shreds of hope, the unexplainable occurrences and bizarre happenings eventually lead them to one question that should give them all the answers they need. What is Hayling?

This is part one basically, of up to three parts. I understand the initial concept might sound a little cliched, but once you see some of the artwork I plan for it, you'll see that it's quite unique. Most of the really interesting and meaty stuff I can't reveal without destroying plot details, but that'll all come later!

I hope to get some conceptual pieces done for it soon to give you guys more of a visual cue for the story. And don't worry, it'll have plenty of sci-fi elements.

Anyway, I hope this whets your appetite somewhat. The project is still in the very early stages, but I'm writing up a storm for it and I'm really excited.

It really reminds me of the plot from Cube. But still a good idea.

Totally thinking about Saw when reading that description. Saw with a...science fiction twist? Could be interesting.

At it's core, it starts out that way, but it turns into a lot more. It's hard to get a good synopsis down for it without revealing too much, but I think I'm going to tweak it soon.

Hey rahll!!! man I think this is very exciting. I consider that jumping into something like this is huge and I admire that a lot. Personally I have always wanted to make a stroy of my own but i still think I need more practice for that. On the other hand I think I don't and That I should leave all the fears behind and do it you know? Let me ask you this. What makes you feel comfortable enough for taking a step like this? Do you think it's just experience? Or maybe, not just that, but also technical stuff like the hardware you use (maybe a tablet is obligatory, maybe a decent PC is also obligatory...maybe not!!)? I feel sometimes that my art is really neat. Then I see stuff like yours and think that it still needs work. Then I find out that there is much much more than jsut pencils and PS, stuff like acrylics, water colours, oils...AND DAMN!! I suddenly feel all tiny lol. What to do? Maybe it's just something I'll have to find out for myself sooner or later, but some help won't hurt right? thks!

Hey, thanks a lot :)

I think it's all about taking small steps, and tackling obstacles one at a time. If you look at all the stuff you've yet to accomplish, it becomes really intimidating and you have a much harder time even getting started. Set small goals, that way you'll continually have victories, instead of feeling like you're always failing when you realize how much you've yet to do.

As for tackling a project so big, yeah, a lot of it does come down to experience, but it's also the challenge that interests me. It gives me an opportunity to really explore both my strengths and weaknesses as an artist and try to accomplish something big. Something with a story, and compelling characters, that aren't limited to a single painting, but have a world built around them, somewhere to develop things.

It's ambitious, yes, but it's also a logical step. It's nice to have a direction and not always wonder "what am I going to paint next?" When there's a story I want to tell, there will always be something to work on, even when my inspiration is shot. So it's both a project to baby and develop hopefully into something big, as well as a fail safe for when I can't manage to do something else.

But, like I said, it's baby steps. I have ideas that I wrote down for Hayling, things from dreams and other ideas. Other than that, I don't have any art, or characters yet. I've spent most of my time building back story, and it's nice, because I'm not overwhelmed with doing EVERYTHING at once. I can take bite sized pieces of the project and work them individually and eventually combine them. So I definitely recommend working it like that.

Good luck!

it looks great, it's a bit mysterious, but thats perfect cause it makes me wanna know more about it, it's also a bit abstract and not too much literally. i guess i love it...
and about the plot, as some people said before it sounds a bit like saw, but knowing you i guess it's gonna be preety much like a sci-fi version of it, i think it would be really cool, anyways, good luck with it:D
